Bailout? Whose Bailout?

Okay, so I was wrong when I said that congress would sign a deal yesterday.  But by all accounts, it appeared as though they would.  Then John McCain and Barack Obama showed up, and all hell, it broketh loose.

I think the idea was, for McCain anyway, to appear in the senate when they were signing the bill and try to claim some kind of credit.  But instead, everyone seemed to get pissed when he and Obama showed up, because it reminded them of how much they hated their idealogical opponents.

In particular, the extra conservative brand of Republicans are more interested in the markets failing than they are in spending government money.  That’s okay, philosophically (though, as is so often the case with extremism, it’s not okay practically), but they were ready to bite the bullet and vote for the bill before the candidates showed up.  Let’s hope that after McCain is forced to eat his words and show up at the debate tonight, congress can start doing some real work.
