Bush on $4.00 Gas: ‘That’s News to Me!’

Bush’s Budget, Courtesy CNN

No one is better at knowing the life and plight of the common folk than George W. Bush. That’s why he has that accent, remember? We’d all love to have a beer with him.

Today, after economists said that the price of gas — which is already $3.50/gallon in some places — would continue to rise, and would hit $4.00 this summer, some nice journalist asked our president what he thought about that. His response? He hadn’t heard about it. But he still knows whats best for us.

His solution? Make his special brand of tax cuts, which have been in effect for the better part of a decade, permanent. I mean, they’ve been working pretty well so far — right, people?

  1. Bush is so far out of touch from the American people it’s ridiculous. When will somebody stand up for the American people and stop this madness at the pumps? Everytime they raise the price of gas, they always have some excuse (lack of sufficient refineries, change in the mixture, rise in demand, etc.) Give us a break, they’re making record profits everyday while the average American is hurting these days. Has any of the candidates offered any solutions?

    Couldn’t agree more, Erik.

No one believes that the reason prices are rising is because of simple economics or supply and demand. You can’t claim to merely be passing your expenses on to the consumers if you’re reaping record profits at the same time. That’s just not how it works.

Most of the candidates claim to have solutions — particularly Clinton and Obama. Mostly, the ideas are to give tax breaks to the middle class who has to pay for most of the gas. Of course, that won’t make the actual prices lower. Obama has said that he wants to sit down and put together some kind of investigation into the oil industry’s “price gouging,” but there’s no telling what that would eventually accomplish.

Ultimately, high gas prices are better now than when the resources *actually* start running out. The one thing that it’s certain almost EVERY candidate will do, including John McCain, is subsidize alternative energy sources like Ethanol, and give tax breaks on research and development for the car companies — hopefully, within a decade or two, the idea of gas being too expensive won’t be possible, because there will be so many other options.
